The Hungarian government has announced the commencement of commercial operations at a 233 MW solar power plant located in Mezőcsát, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, northern Hungary. This solar farm, developed by PolSolar, represents the country's largest and contributes to Hungary's goal of reducing reliance on natural gas and increasing electricity generation from alternative sources.
To fund the Mezőcsát solar plant, PolSolar successfully raised €174 million ($185.9 million) through a 15-year bond issuance under the Bond Funding for Growth Scheme (BGS) managed by the National Bank of Hungary. The project will supply power to the national grid under a contract for difference (CfD) scheme.
Hungary aims to decrease its energy import dependency, and this solar power plant inauguration is seen as a significant step in achieving that objective. Despite limited capacity additions in 2022, Hungary had already installed 2.98 GW of solar capacity by the end of 2020, according to data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
